re: VANGUARD Spec: 216 points and 236 points

Vanguards, the MOST useless of all the specs in Big Battles. However, a good vanguard makes a huge difference in a DPS race boss fights such as the Bred for Battle SQ in Deeping Wall raid or in 6 man Pelargir.

LEGEND for the yellow numbers:

    1. Rending Bark skill: _%incoming damage debuff for _seconds. Cost 4 killstreaks
    2. Stunning Bellow: This consumes all 20 kill streaks you've got. What it does when used is that, it changes the morale of the enemy from let's say 600K to 450K.(Not the exact figures but that's how it works.)
    3. Incite foe skill: An Aggro skill that deals damage. Useful in luring the bosses.
    4. buffs from a vanguard, you can only activate 1 from the drop down menu.
    5. buffs from a vanguard., you can only activate 1 from the drop down menu.
    6. Is your kill streak meter.
Note: You can also use the skills in between number 1 and number 2 in the picture above. Though Rending bark should be 1 of your priority skills to use when in vanguard mode.

There are many builds for Vanguards that you can do. The one below is a hybrid build of a Vanguard+Engineer, so I focused my points on the things that would matter most for a vanguard.

236 Points

Pros of this build:

  • Your are able to max your kill streaks to 20/20
  • Rending bark skill: 50% incoming damage debuff for 9-10 secs
  • Stunning Bellow(consumes 20/20 kill streak)
  • Trap debuff: 30% incoming damage to the trapped enemy. You can use caltrops/tripwire/bear trap.
  • You are rank 6 Vanguard+ rank 5 Engineer. Therefore you can dismantle and carry barricades PLUS upgrade them  Versatile and self sufficient on tripwires.

Cons:

  • You need to earn your kill streak, sometimes building kill streak takes some time.
  • You have to be always on the frontline to earn your kill streak.
  • Long cooldown on traps plus they won't last long if there are many enemies walking on your traps.
  • Never switch to engineer or officer, this will reset your kill streaks.
  • Non-AOE/low DPS chars may have difficulty earning kill streaks.

How to use this build on Pelargir:

  • Do your best to earn as many kill streaks as you can. 20/20 would be best in order for you to use the Stunning Bellow skill.
  • Use your vanguard skills for the boss only.
  • Only use your traps on the spot where your group is fighting the boss (You can put traps while using your skill). This would give the boss a 50% incoming damage debuff(rending bark)+30% incoming damage debuff(Trap debuff)
  • You can aggro the boss using the INCITE FOE skill

Another Vanguard build. Haven't tried in an actual run.

Legend for the Yellow numbers as follows:

  1. Increases your chance to earn kill streaks.
  2. Increases the maximum kill streaks that you can earn up to 20/20.
  3. Decreases the cooldown of your vanguard skills.
  4. Increases the duration of your vanguard debuffs.
  5. Increases the potency of your debuff.

Benefit of this build:

  1. Duration of debuffs = 18 secs
  2. Cooldown of skills = 15 secs
  3. Potency of debuff is maxed.
  4. Therefore, your Rending Bark will give a 50% incoming damage debuff for 18 secs.
  5. Plus you will be able to cast another Rending Bark on the boss since your cooldown is just 15 secs. Unless the boss died in less than 15 seconds

Finally got a chance to take a look at this and it seems very helpful. I tried running a Vangard spec earlier and had I perused this first, it would've made the run a lot smoother. Thanks for the info!
